Chapter 12

From the time we saw the very first enemy cresting the horizon to the beginning of the actual battle was about an hour. Xollmomath and I gave out orders to everyone in Undercroft Citadel, organizing our defenses as best we could. We got an unexpected break when the necromancer discovered that he could—for a very limited time—directly take control of Alyssa in order to make use of her scouting abilities. Xollmomath was able to give us a clear picture of the forces coming to our gate. Unfortunately, that picture was a grim one.

Resurrection numbered about a hundred members. Most of them were in the low twenties and thirties, probably newer recruits. The core of the guild was made up of Kevin and the rest of the guild’s main raiding team. Those ten would be extremely difficult to kill. Our only sliver of hope against them was that almost all of their game experience was against scripted dungeons and not other players. It was little consolation.

In front of Resurrection was a veritable horde of minions. Xollmomath guessed their number to be around five hundred. They were from all different guilds and even other city allegiances. It seemed that quite a few people cared enough about the evil growing in their midst to risk their lives in order to excise it. It made sense. We were growing strong, and that meant no one was safe.

My heart sank when Xollmomath told me not a single one of the attackers was from Vic’s group of raiders. We wouldn’t be that lucky.

Once they were all assembled about a hundred yards from our wall, the militia began wheeling two great war engines to their front lines. They had a catapult and a siege tower, and from my position atop the necropolis, I could see a couple dozen ladders among them as well. The siege tower would have to be our first priority. Our attackers knew it, and they had cast enough protective wards around the structure to make it glow and shimmer in the afternoon sunlight.

“Xia! How far can you throw a fireball?” I called down to the lone warlock stationed below me on the stairs. She had her own pair of gargoyle escorts to fly her around as needed behind our walls.

“Not that far!” she called back.

“Damn.” We needed to take out the siege tower before it got to the moat or we’d be screwed. Our small force could hold the wall for a decent amount of time against the militia, but once they broke through the lines, I didn’t think we would last more than a few minutes. There were just so many of them.

Time to pick a new talent for hitting level fifteen. As always, I had three options, one for each primary stat:

Become Colossal (Physical): Calling upon Lady Kalma’s imperious strength, the deathbringer grows in stature to fully represent the true strength of an unholy goddess. The amount of growth is proportional to the number of corpses surrounding the deathbringer, and the spell lasts as long as killing continues.
